Chalmers Elementary School

Home of the Stingers

August 17, 2017

As the Chalmers School Community knows there was a suspicious fire on the school playground early in the morning on August 9th.

District staff is working with our insurance company and school administrators to move the process along, in order that the playground can be repaired as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, these processes take time, it is very unlikely that repairs to the playground will be able to happen before the start of school.

Just as with most types of insurance, there are steps and protocols to follow as we work with our insurers to resolve the claim. There is a deductible expense that is covered by the District, and the costs of repairs will be covered by insurance.

It is important to note that because the playground is over 10 years old, exact replacement components may not be available, in those instances pieces that are "similar to" or “best fit” will be ordered, as per our insurance coverage.

District staff, school administrators, and Delta Police take vandalism to school property very seriously. We are saddened that this has happened, and are very grateful no one was hurt.

Moving forward, I will be available to communicate with our school's PAC, staff, students and parent community about updates and further news about the playground. We will know more as we get closer to September.

We appreciate all your understanding and the support that has been shared as we work to make the playground operational once again.

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year, this unfortunate incident is not going to prevent us from having a great year of inspiring educational experiences and outdoor learning!
